Code: CGFE1 – Commercial Gas Fuelled Engines / CHP

Expiry:

5 years. Candidates can undertake the re-assessment of any element up to 6 months early without losing any time (MOT Style). Previous certificates must be produced at the time of assessment as evidence.

Background:

CGFE1 tests the gas safety competence of an operative in the work of installation, commissioning, servicing, repair and break down of gas fuelled spark ignition and dual fuelled engines. Candidates who carry out work solely on individually sited gas engines in purpose-built enclosures, containing no other gas appliances, may hold COCNP/1LS as an alternative pre-requisite core COCN1.  This course / assessment can be carried out at SGAS, or suitable on-site location.

• Operation and checking of appliance gas safety devices and controls
• Ventilation requirements
• Exhaust requirements

Pre-requisites:

For the initial assessment candidates must meet the entry requirements as laid out in guidance note 8 for category 1, 2, and 3 entrants (see ACS scheme rules).

For the re-assessment candidates must have held the element previously – if this has expired within 12 months of the assessment date the initial assessment must be undertaken.

Operatives must hold either the Core Commercial Gas Safety (COCN1) or the Changeover Domestic to Commercial Gas Safety (CODNCO1).

Alternatively, if the operative works solely on the engine and is responsible for the maintenance and servicing of the appliance, (not the installation), and the engine is housed within an acoustically isolated plant room on it’s own, then the operative can undertake the Core Commercial Limited Scope COCN1PILS and CGFE1. This would allow the operative to work on the appliance, but not to undertake any other work on gas installations unless additional ACS qualifications are gained

The COCN1 core commercial gas safety certificate has an equivalence to a Level 3 qualification and satisfies the same criteria leading to a certificate of competence recognised by the Gas Safe Register.

Assessment method:

Assessment is carried out using a variety of methods, including multiple choice, short written response, scenario questions and observed practical assessment.
