What is a Category 2 Gas Course?
The applicant must supply information regarding their gas industry experience and/or qualifications currently or previously held.
Applicants must specify each type of gas work (as identified in the ACS codes e.g. CCN1 = Core Domestic Gas safety) that you wish to carry out and the application category (shown below) that you believe you are. For details of codes refer to ‘GAS COURSES’
Please note that if there is specific or material cause to doubt the validity of your application, the Assessment Centre must validate the information provided and may reject the application if satisfactory supportive evidence is not available.
If an application is rejected, you will be notified promptly in written form with the reasons stated.
Please note. The Assessment Centre will rigorously adhere to the application categories.
Applicants will fall into one of the three categories listed below. Applicants that do not satisfy the criteria of Categories 1 or 2 will be classified as category 3, which is a new entrant to the gas industry.
Category 2
Category 2 Applicants are persons applying for certification who do not fall into category 1 or 3. For example an individual who is seeking gas certification for the first time and is currently qualified in a trade allied to gas work. E.g. Plumber, HVAC technician. Refrigeration engineer.
Please note. Category 2 also includes Applicants who would normally fall into category 1 but
a) have had a gas competency certificate or qualification withdrawn in the past, or
b) been deemed incompetent in the past in matters of gas safety.
Applicants must provide evidence that they hold qualifications relevant to the area of gas work they are seeking to obtain certification in.
Please note. The qualifications submitted must have enabled competence to be demonstrated in the generic work activities associated with fossil fuelled appliances/equipment and/or pipework installation, including, any of the following work activities, flueing or ventilation or the installation, maintenance or commissioning of such appliances. Applicants must present evidence to the Assessment Centre prior to the commencement of assessment.
Examples of appropriate qualifications include:
a) Plumbing craft qualification or N/SVQ (oil and/or solid fuel options) – suitable initially for domestic or commercial central, water heating or pipework installation.
b) Pipefitter/welder craft qualification or N/SVQ – suitable initially for commercial pipework, pipework commissioning and meter installation.
c) Heating and Ventilation craft qualification or N/SVQ – suitable initially for commercial pipework and appliance installation
d) Refrigeration Engineer/fitter craft qualification or N/SVQ – suitable initially for commercial appliance and pipework installation
SGAS offer an extended Gas Training Programme and ASC Assessment Package for Category 2 Applicants.
Completion of the Category 2 Gas Course, ACS Assessment and certification will entitle the candidate to apply for immediate Gas Safe Registration
